You hear about them seemingly everyday on the local and national news. Disasters. Fires, earthquakes, floods, etc. The list is endless. Thankfully, there are measures that can be taken by you and yours to help minimize the damage by these fateful events.


Fire:

1. Inspect electrical cords and replace worn or broken ones

6. Avoid overloading electrical outlets or extension cords

2. Repair broken appliances

7. Install heat and smoke detectors

3. Put a collapsible ladder on the upper floor

8. Keep fire extinguishers handy, especially in the kitchen

4. Store flammable liquid in a secure spot outside your home

9. Designate fire escape routes, practice fire drills, and make sure your family has a designated meeting place outside

5. Install and maintain smoke detectors

 

Earthquakes:

1. Don't erect mirrors or heavy pictures over your bed and keep an "earthquake kit" handy

4. Make sure your house is up to code and bolted to its foundation

2. If you are driving, stop. Try to avoid buildings, freeway overpasses, and power lines

5. Have an earthquake disaster plan with a meeting point for all your family members

3. Designate a friend or relative in another city to act as a message center, in case communications are down

6. If an earthquake does occur, get under a table or desk or stand in a doorway
